What is the Common Syllabus Template Editor (CST) role in Simple Syllabus?

The Common Syllabus Template Editor (CST) role is responsible for managing and editing the Common Syllabus Template. Users in this role can add department specific components to the PCC template and control whether those components can be edited in CRN-level syllabi.

Common Syllabus Templates provide a standardized framework that promotes consistency, ensures compliance, and reduces duplication of effort.

Does my department have to use a Common Syllabus Template?

No. If your department does not need to add specific or unique information to the PCC template, you do not need to have a Common Syllabus Template.

When can I edit the Common Syllabus Template?

The Common Common Syllabus Template has an editing window that allows Course Editors to make changes to their template before CRN-level syllabi are available to instructors. You can find the Syllabus Schedule here.

What can a Common Syllabus Template Editor (CST) do?

Common Syllabus Template Editor (CST) are authorized to:

  • Add components to the existing PCC Template for all modalities (e.g., policies, lab safety statement, and more)
  • Enables/disables editing rights for newly added components only for all modalities at the CRN-level
  • Arrange the order of the components for all modalities

Note: Any components that CST editors can edit is also editable by CRN-level editors. CST editors cannot lock components or restrict edits by CRN-level editors.

If you add information that should be retained, please communicate this to your faculty.

Do I have to complete a Common Syllabus Template for each term?

Yes. If you teach ART 100 during the Summer, Fall, Fall A, Fall B, Spring, Spring A, Spring B, you will have to complete and submit a Common Syllabus Template for each term in each academic year.

Who typically edits the Common Syllabus Template (CST) ?

This role can be requested by anyone who wished to edit the Common Syllabus Template (CST). Typically it is the department heads, instructional designers, or course leads who oversee course standards and ensure compliance with academic policies and procedures.

Can multiple Template Editors collaborate on the same template?

Yes. More than one Common Syllabus Template Editor (CST) can be assigned to a template. However, we are encouraging your area to establish a clear workflow process to avoid conflicting edits. Additionally a CST can not be edited simultaneously.

What happens when a CST is updated?

New syllabi created after the update of the Common Syllabus Template (CST), will flow to the CRN-level template.
