Students are given email reminders about an upcoming assignment's deadline within 3, 2, and 1 days (or if the grade is 0) when they have not yet started the assignment. Instructors and students also receive notifications when they are mentioned in comments, updates happen in a conversation they participate in, and they receive a chat message in Perusall.  If these reminders or notifications are undesirable, users can follow the instructions below to turn them off.
