Perusall: Differentiated Assignments

Updated on

About

Typically most assignments in Perusall are assigned to all students. However, Perusall does offer an option for assigning only specific students to an assignment. This is known as a differentiated assignment. Some possible use cases for differentiated assignments include group work, peer review, make-up assignments, extra credit assignments, individualized instruction, and formative assessment.

If you would like to extend the deadline on a certain assignment for some students, and would like the assignment to still be assigned to all students, then extend the deadline for certain students rather than creating a differentiated assignment.

Prerequisite

Create a folder with the differentiated content documents you would like students to engage with. This folder should contain at least two documents.

Example Instructions for Students: Each of you has been assigned a different article to read for this activity. As you read, annotate 3 to 5 key arguments made. For each annotation be sure to highlight the argument in the document and create a short explanation of why you selected that argument.

There are several optional settings you can customize for your differentiated assignment, such as setting the date and time when the assignment becomes visible to students, allowing students to post anonymously, and enabling other optional toggles. We recommend using the default pre-selected options unless you have a specific need or use case for your course.
