About
This guide shows you how to open and read your Ally Course Accessibility Report in D2L Brightspace. You will learn how to check your course accessibility score, understand score icons, find accessibility issues, and use Ally's built-in tips to fix them.
Step-by-Step Guidance
The Ally Course Report gives you a complete overview of all documents, images, and web pages in your course so you can see where improvements are needed.
- Log into D2L Brightspace and open your course.
- In the main course navigation bar (navbar) at the top, click Tools.
- Select Ally Course Report from the dropdown menu.
When you open the report, you will see a large dial showing your courseβs overall accessibility score as a percentage.
- Score Ranges:
- π΄ Low (0% β 33%): Needs attention first. Materials have major accessibility barriers.
- π Medium (34% β 66%): Partially accessible, but several items need improvement.
- π’ High (67% β 99%): Mostly accessible with only small fixes needed.
- π’ Perfect (100%): All files pass accessibility checks.
Next to files and pages in D2L, you will see small colored gauge icons. These show the accessibility level for each individual item:
- π΄ Red Gauge: Has major issues (for example, a scanned PDF screen readers cannot read).
- π Orange Gauge: Has moderate issues (for example, hard-to-read text color contrast).
- π’ Light Green Gauge: Mostly accessible with minor items to tweak.
- π’ Dark Green Gauge: Fully accessible.
Note: Only instructors and course creators see these colored gauge icons. Students cannot see them.
The Ally Course Report categorizes every detected accessibility error into a clear, interactive table so you can review and organize your workflow.
Navigating the Three Priority Views
At the top of the report dashboard, Ally provides three ways to view your issues:
- Content with the easiest issues to fix: Filters for simple, high-reward tasks (such as adding missing image descriptions or document titles) that take only a few seconds to complete.
- Fix low-scoring content: Filters specifically for files with a score of 0% to 33%, allowing you to target severe barriers first.
- All Issues List: Displays the master list of every single issue flagged in your course.
Detailed Breakdown of the Issues List Table
Inside the main issues list, each row provides specific data to help you decide what to fix next:
- Issue Description: Specifies the exact problem detected (e.g., "The document is missing headings", "The image is missing alt text", or "PDF is untagged").
- Severity Tag: Flags the issue level:
- π΄ Severe: Prevents students using screen readers or assistive technology from accessing core content.
- π Major: Makes content difficult to navigate or read clearly.
- π’ Minor: Small formatting details that need optimization.
- Affected Items Count: Shows the exact number of files or HTML pages containing that specific issue across your course.
- Start / Fix Button: Opens the specific list of affected files so you can launch the remediation panel for any item.
Ally does not just tell you what is wrongβit walks you through how to fix it.
- Click the Gauge Icon or Fix button next to any item in your list.
- A side panel will open showing:
- What the issue is: A simple explanation of the problem.
- Why it matters: How the issue affects students using screen readers or assistive tools.
- How to fix it: Clear, step-by-step instructions for updating the file in Word, PowerPoint, or PDF, along with an upload box to drop in your updated file.
Keep in mind that not all course content items can be remediated directly in Ally as shown in the image above. PDFs and slide presentations often will need to be fixed in the original file and re-uploaded to the course.
You are done. Great job!
