Importing/Exporting/Copying Components From One Course to Another (Cloning)

Updated on

If you want to select components from a Master shell, or if you don't own the CRN or Instructor Dev that contains the items you want, you'll need to submit a cloning request through TDX.

To do so, click here.

4: From the Import/Export/Copy Components page under Copy Components from another Org Unit, select the light gray box labeled "Search for offering."

To see what courses have already been cloned into your course, you can select the blue View History link.

Note: if this is a new course and there hasn't been any previous cloning done, the View History link will not be visible to you.

5: A Select Course Offering box will pop up and from within the search box type in the CRN or Instructor Dev you want cloned into your course and select the light gray Search button. Select the dial to the left of the course name to select the course you want to clone and then select the blue Add Selected box down at the bottom of the popup.

If you prefer, you can also leave the search box blank and simply select the "Search" button. This will show you a list of all courses that you can import, export, or copy components from.

6: The course you selected will populate under the Course to Copy area. You will then select the light gray Select Components button located at the bottom of the Import/Export/Copy Components window.

When copying course components, you may see a "Copy This Again?" box appear if you have previously copied from the course.

If you wish to copy all components again, select the "Copy All" option. You should only select this option if you have an empty shell as otherwise, you will end up with duplicates of all items. You can request the D2L team reset your shell if you still have content in it using a TDX ticket.

Otherwise, you can select specific components to copy, proceed to step seven, and select "Select Components."

7: From the Copy Course Components page, you will select all items that you want to clone over. In this example, we select the check box next to Discussions and the dial next to Select Individual Items to Copy. Once you choose your components to copy, select the blue Continue button at the bottom of the page.

Keep the "Include associated files" box selected to ensure any images, HTML files or other components within these items to also clone over.

8: From the Select Discussion Forums and Topics page, select the blue Expand All link to show all items. Select the items you want to clone over and select the blue Continue button.

9: From the Select Course Material page, select the blue Finish button to start the copy/cloning process.

10: There will be a loading bar when the copying is in progress. When the copy/cloning has completed, the loading bar will change to a gray checkmark.

Additionally, the selected components can now be accessed and edited in their respective individual tools.

Under the "Changing Selected Components" dropdown, after step 6, the "i" mentions "If you wish to copy all components again, select the "Copy All" option." Perhaps we can change this wording since copying all components more than once can cause problems, especially if all components from the original copy are still in the shell.
